New Chip Enhanced Debit Cards
HOW TO PERFORM CHIP TRANSACTIONS AT ATM AND POINT OF SALE TERMINALS:
Insert the chip card into the terminal (ATM or point of sale), following the instructions on the terminal. It is important to leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is complete. If the card is removed too soon, the transaction will end and the purchase will not be processed.
The ATM terminal will require that you enter a PIN, as is currently done. The point of sale terminal may require a PIN to be entered or sign a sales receipt to complete the transaction.
For point of sale transactions, the terminal will display the purchase amount.
When the transaction is complete, it is important to remember to remove the card.
FAQ’S ABOUT THE NEW SMART CHIP CARD
What is a Smart Chip or Chip Card?
The chip card comes with an encrypted microchip embedded in the card. The microchip provides an enhanced layer of security to transactions.
How is the Chip Card More Secure?
The embedded microchip provides unique data specific to the card and the transaction being processed. These security features make the new chip card extremely difficult to counterfeit.
Why is the card being upgraded to be a Chip Card?
Chip technology is already used in other countries and is now coming to the U.S. The new chip-enabled card provides an extra level of security and is easier to use at places already chip ready.
Can the card be used for everyday transactions or at non-chip terminals?
Yes! The chip card will also have the usual magnetic stripe on the back so the card can continue to be used at ATMs and Point of Sale Terminals while merchants in the U.S. are transitioning to new terminals.
